Advent Beer Calendar 2010: Day 5: Fireside Chat

21st Amendment Fireside ChatHere in the United States, December 5th is regarded as Repeal Day—the day the 21st Amendment to our Constitution was ratified, which repealed the 18th Amendment—thus ending the “Noble Experiment” of Prohibition in the U.S. To commemorate the anniversary I decided to pick a beer from San Francisco’s 21st Amendment Brewery: Fireside Chat.

Fireside Chat is a “Winter Spiced Ale” and is the first canned holiday beer 21st Amendment has released (new this year). The can features an image of President Franklin Roosevelt enjoying a beer by the fireplace, and (not pictured here) is apparently laughing and chatting with an elf!

Like FDR’s Depression-era radio addresses, which were like a kick in the butt and a hug at the same time, our Fireside Chat is a subtle twist on the traditional seasonal brew. We begin with a rich, dark, English-style ale and then we improvise with spices until we know we have a beer worth sharing with the nation.

Fireside Chat is our early winter seasonal brew available from October through December in six pack cans and on draft. Brewed like a classic, warming Strong Ale but with a subtle blend of hand-selected spices for just the right festive flair.

Roosevelt ran for president on a platform that included repeal of Prohibition, which makes this a doubly appropriate Repeal Day beer! Fireside Chat is 7.9% alcohol by volume and in addition to spices (they don’t specify which), there are also cocoa nibs in the brew.

BeerAdvocate: B-. RateBeer: 2.91/5, 41st percentile.
