Received: The Abyss 2010

Forgot to mention this the other day (been busy with the Advent Beer Calendar!): I received a bottle of this year’s The Abyss from Deschutes Brewery. I had stopped in to the release party last week and had a glass of it on nitro (pretty amazing) and picked up a bottle then, also; expect a review soon.

Advent Beer Calendar 2010: Day 8: White Birch Holiday Ale

Today’s pick comes from White Birch Brewing in New Hampshire, a relatively new brewery (the state’s “first nano-brewery” brewing on a seven barrel system): their Holiday Ale. This is a limited run that they are bottling, hand-dipping in wax, and doing something unique with the labels: White Birch Brewing is pleased to announce that we will again be selling our Holiday Ale featuring a customizable To and From label. Each 22 ounce bottle will be … Continue reading →

Advent Beer Calendar 2010: Day 7: Nøgne Ø/Jolly Pumpkin/Stone Special Holiday Ale

It pours with a really creamy head that stays for a while and seeped out of the bottle when I was first trying to open it…. The smell was at first vaguely … Continue reading →

Advent Beer Calendar 2010: Day 6: Batemans Rosey Nosey

Today we’re skipping back across the pond to Merry Old England to select a whimsical Winter Warmer from Batemans Brewery: Rosey Nosey. Featuring a red-nosed Santa Claus (though in England they call him Father Christmas) on the label, this lower-middle strength beer is sure to “put a glow into Christmas.” Rosey Nosey is 4.9% alcohol by volume but promises a rich and complex character, bolstered by generous English hop flavors. Batemans indicates that it “compliments … Continue reading →

Advent Beer Calendar 2010: Day 5: Fireside Chat

Here in the United States, December 5th is regarded as Repeal Day—the day the 21st Amendment to our Constitution was ratified, which repealed the 18th Amendment—thus ending the “Noble Experiment” of Prohibition in the U.S. To commemorate the anniversary I decided to pick a beer from San Francisco’s 21st Amendment Brewery: Fireside Chat. Fireside Chat is a “Winter Spiced Ale” and is the first canned holiday beer 21st Amendment has released (new this year). The … Continue reading →
