Advent Beer Calendar 2010: Day 13: Hawai’i Nui Southern Cross

Each year for the Advent Calendar I try to find a Hawaiian beer for one of the daily selections, but come up short: while Hawaii has a small number of breweries and brewpubs, I couldn’t find any that offered a winter or holiday ale (or at least, nothing that was listed online). That changes this year with today’s selection: Hawai’i Nui Brewing’s Southern Cross Seasonal Ale, a big winter ale (though “winter ale” in Hawaii … Continue reading →

Advent Beer Calendar 2010: Day 12: Corsendonk Christmas Ale

Today’s pick is another highly-rated holiday ale from Belgium: Corsendonk Christmas Ale, a dark and spicy strong ale at 8.5% alcohol by volume. It makes its appearance for the holiday season starting in November and the brewery describes it thusly: For this reddish brown Christmas beer, the Corsendonk brewer uses roasted special malts, the finest hops and selected yeasts, spiced up with a touch of coriander. With its delicate malty nose, Corsendonk Christmas Ale has … Continue reading →

Advent Beer Calendar 2010: Day 11: Telegraph Winter Ale

Today’s beer is another selection from Mario at Brewed for Thought. Mario has selected an ale from Telegraph Brewing that was inspired by Mexican hot chocolate. Telegraph’s Winter Ale starts with an aroma of roasted malts and allspice. A sweetness is balanced by a roasted malt and dry cinnamon flavor with a smokey chile finishing on your palate as you swallow. There’s a subtle heat on the tongue but nothing overpowering. Smooth yet bold flavors … Continue reading →

Advent Beer Calendar 2010: Day 10: Hopworks Abominable Winter Ale

Today’s beer pick comes from Portland blogger Jeff Alworth, author of the top-ranked Beervana blog. Jeff has selected a new winter favorite from Hopworks Urban Brewery. When we think of Christmas ales, our minds turn to the burnished, sweet, and alcoholic.  Liquid sugarplums.  In the winter, we need hearty comfort drink to accompany our roast beast. Hopworks didn’t get the memo.  Their winter ale is called Abominable, and it tears through the season with razor … Continue reading →

Advent Beer Calendar 2010: Day 9: Great Lakes Christmas Ale

Today’s pick is a classic Winter Warmer from Ohio’s Great Lakes Brewing: Great Lakes Christmas Ale. Even though it had a bit of a late start this year (read their open letter to find out why), this popular Midwest seasonal is back in strength for the holiday season. As befitting a Christmas beer, this one is brewed with something extra: along with a roasty, malty Winter Warmer grain bill and Hallertau and Cascade hops, honey, … Continue reading →
