Harpoon Munich Dark

January 12th, 2009

Harpoon Munich DarkTime to catch up on some older reviews. Harpoon Munich Dark is brewed in the style of a Munich Dunkel, dark and flavorful without being too heavy. At 5.5% alcohol, it goes down pretty easy. Harpoon Brewery itself says:

Harpoon Munich Dark is a blend of dark malts that creates a deeper hue than some other beers brewed in this style. The grains which create a malty chocolate-like flavor also add a warm malty nose that mingles with the subtle hop aroma. This medium bodied beer is balanced quite well with a moderately bitter hop finish.

Appearance: Dark mahogany brown that looks deeply red when held to the light. Tan head like wood putty.

Smell: Roasted grains and a pungency that reminds me of fresh-cracked grains at the homebrew shop. A bit of coffee in the nose, too.

Taste: Nutty, roasted flavor that is dry without being astringent. Steely hops and a coffee-like character.

Mouthfeel: Shy of medium-bodied but very crisp and clean, like there’s a hard water element to it.

On BeerAdvocate it scores a grade of B+. On RateBeer it scores 3.28/5, and is in their 68th percentile.
