Growler fills are always a great deal, especially since you can get them filled with stuff you might not otherwise find on the shelf. Here in San Diego, Stone, Port, Green Flash, etc. usually have special days where you can come in and get a growler fill of specialties (like Stone's Ruination dry-hopped, or Port's Judgment Day Barrel-aged) for the same price as a regular fill. Half a gallon of awesome beer for $8 - $9 -- how can you go wrong?

Brewpubs around here (Portland) do not require you to purchase their growlers to buy beer to go. Just bring your own container and have them fill it. Also there is a low-priced micro, Woof, that makes several decent bottled beers that you can get at New Seasons groceries (again in Portland). Sometimes they're on sale for $4.99/6-pack; otherwise $1 more.

My favorite local brew store also has a clearance rack. Some of the stuff on the rack is being discontinued, and some of it is technically past the expiration date on the bottle, but ironically, a lot of it is also high enough in alcohol that you would cellar it anyway. I've gotten a fair amount of great deals this way.

Thanks for the tips. Trader Joe's in my neck of the woods can't sell alcohol, but "dock sales" is one idea I hadn't heard of and will definitely be checking out.
