10 Barrel and Blockbuster team up to brew… The Last Blockbuster

10 Barrel Brewing, The Last Blockbuster

In today’s craziest beer news (and it’s only Monday morning), Bend’s 10 Barrel Brewing announced that it is teaming up with Bend’s Blockbuster video store—recently in the news for officially being the last Blockbuster store in the lower 48 states—to brew a collaboration beer named… you guessed it… The Last Blockbuster.

(For some background on the Blockbuster store, our local news had a story on it, as did OPB.)

I’ve never really associated “Blockbuster” with beer so this is definitely out there. Here is the announcement:

Remember how excited you would get when the latest blockbuster was released on DVD and you’d head to your local Blockbuster, hoping they’d have a copy left for you? Those days have come and gone but, as you may have seen, there is only one remaining Blockbuster located right here in Bend, where you can relive your movie renting experience.

To keep the experience alive, 10 Barrel teamed up with the Blockbuster team to create an exclusive Blockbuster beer! The “official” Blockbuster beer – The Last Blockbuster – pairs perfectly with buttery theater popcorn and your favorite movie-sized chocolate with a light body, smooth finish and hints of nostalgia.

10 Barrel and Blockbuster will be hosting a block party on Friday, September 21st at the last-standing Blockbuster, where the exclusive, limited-time-only beer will be officially released. The block party will be open to the public and attendees will have a chance to taste the new beer, grab a bite to eat, and watch an iconic summer blockbuster on the big screen with a beer in hand. Stay tuned for more details regarding the block party in the coming weeks. The Last Blockbuster beer will also be available at the 10 Barrel Westside and Eastside pubs for a limited time.

The beer itself is a variant of the brewery’s Sinistor Black Ale, brewed “with nuances of red licorice” and is 5.7% ABV. I don’t quite know what to think about a red licorice-infused black ale, but it sounds better than the diacetyl-drenched imagery the phrase “pairs perfectly with buttery theater popcorn” dredges up.

The beer will only be available at the release/block party on September 21, and at the two Bend 10 Barrel locations (eastside pub/brewery and westside pub).
